Universidade Federal do Rio de Janeiro



The Federal University of Rio de Janeiro – UFRJ is a Brazilian public and free university recognized by its high quality of teaching as well as by its commitment to research. The institution has four campuses in Rio de Janeiro state: Cidade Universitária, Praia Vermelha, Macaé and Xerém, which is comprised of several institutes, faculties, museums, university hospitals, business incubators, and an ocean basin for research on offshore oil exploration.

Currently, the UFRJ offers 156 undergraduate programs, 94 master’s programs, 75 doctorate programs, 112 extension projects and 315 sensu lato graduate courses. It has a student body of 35399 undergraduate students, 5745 master’s students, 4804 doctorate students, 5281 e-learning students; a staff of 3953 professors and researchers, and 8886 technical-administrative employees.

The UFRJ strongly believes in the creation of an intercultural environment not only as a way to foster academic links, but also to strengthen the friendship among people by encouraging the sense of respect for diversity in others.

Following this path, the institution maintains cooperative relations with more than 170 international institutions worldwide. The UFRJ has also established partnerships with many national enterprises, some of which have facilities on the UFRJ campuses (i.e. Petrobrás). Moreover, the Science Park of Rio de Janeiro is in Cidade Universitária, which stimulates a closer exchange of knowledge between students, professors and enterprises.

All these features consolidate the active role of the UFRJ in the development of science, technology and innovation as well as ratifies the institution’s commitment to a conception of a plural, modern and democratic university.
